Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that members of the Michigan National Guard will be helping out at food banks throughout the state.
Members have been assigned to food banks in several counties to help support their efforts in a time of crisis. This is part of the state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Holland Sentinel reported.
In a Facebook post, the Michigan National Guard said members are doing their part in the state's COVID-19 response.
"The National Guard members assisted by packaging thousands of pounds of food for distribution to those in need. Michiganders helping Michiganders. Guard members are trained in a number of skills for a variety of incidents, uniquely qualifying them to assist requesting agencies and communities to help safeguard the citizens of Michigan," the Michigan National Guard wrote on Facebook.
National Guard members are expected to continue helping food banks in Ann Arbor, Pontiac, Flint and Comstock Park through mid-April. There will be approximately ten guards in each community to assist.
Each food bank serves 300 to 600 families in the state each day and offers drive-through food distribution services, the Holland Sentinel reported.
Michigan's National Guard has done more than just help out local food banks; it has also given logistic support to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and assembled and loaded protective gear for health care providers, such as gowns and face masks.
Members of the Michigan National Guard are also serving the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans and the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, the Holland Sentinel reported.
“The aid that men and women of the Michigan National Guard will provide to food banks across Michigan is further proof that the Michigan National Guard is a true cornerstone of Michigan communities,” Whitmer said to Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. “I could not be more proud of their service, commitment and determination; they are making a difference in the state’s response to COVID-19.”
