City of Holland issued the following announcement on May 24.
Dear Market Supporters,
We want to take the time to sincerely thank all of you who shared our emergency alert yesterday and ensure you that customer safety remains our top priority at the Holland Farmers Market.
Please know that we were informed yesterday by Future Days Farm that they sold just one bundle of flat leaf parsley. Since we were unable to identify the customer due to it being a cash transaction, we made every effort to get the word out in hopes of reaching them.
As soon as we were made aware of the concern from the vendor that they discovered a non-edible plant mixed into their raised parsley bed that was picked by accident, we immediately posted an emergency alert on our social media channels and sent a notice out to our email list. We asked the vendor to do the same.
We contacted the Ottawa County Health Department, who also followed suit in sending an emergency alert to local media and their contacts, in addition to posting an alert on their social media channels. As an extra precaution, they also alerted area doctor’s offices and hospitals.
We reached out the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), as did the vendor, to make them aware of the issue and to ask them to visit the vendor to correctly identify the plant in question and address this serious concern. Farmers Markets fall under the jurisdiction of MDARD and we are routinely inspected to ensure that there are no safety violations present at our Market.
Out of an abundance of caution, Future Days Farm will no longer be joining us at the Holland Farmers Market. We appreciate your continued support and your trust in us. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns we can address.
Thank You,
The Holland Farmers Market Staff
