City of Fennville issued the following announcement on June 22
It is with regret that the City has had to close the entrances to the Cemetery. While the City was willing to allow visitors to utilize the cemetery for parking to view the poppy filed, we could only do so while visitor's were being respectful of the property. Unfortunately, the visitors have not only been very disrespectful of the field, but of our cemetery as well.
Last week staff witnessed visitors disregarding the signage, driving through unpaved areas, driving over graves and parking on graves. The worst happened over the weekend, a visitor hit a headstone and left the scene.
At this time it has become too difficult to manage the traffic situation and the damage to our cemetery has become too great and the City can no longer allow parking for viewing the poppy field.
We know this poses an issue with families visiting their loved ones but it is out of respect of those loved ones that this decision was made.If you cannot access your loved one's gravesite by foot, please contact City Hall at (269) 561-8321 and staff will work with you to arrange access.
