CITY OF HOLLAND: Holland BPW Cross Connection Control Program

Webp water106

City of Holland issued the following announcement on July 30.

This video is a public service announcement to educate Holland BPW water customers about the Cross Connection Control Program.

Holland BPW is required by Michigan Law to protect the drinking water system that serves your home from ALL cross connections with potential sources of contamination, and prevent future connections that may contaminate the drinking water system.

What is a cross connection? A cross connection is a plumbing point where contaminated water could potentially mix with clean drinking water. Most residential contamination risks come from underground irrigation systems. Moving forward, those systems will be required to have backflow devices in place and tested regularly. If no backflow devices are present, the law requires them to be installed at the homeowner’s expense. Testing results need to be submitted once every five years by a State of Michigan approved certified tester.

Holland BPW’s Residential Cross Connection Prevention Program involves non-intrusive inspections of your outdoor plumbing. You will receive a postcard in the mail when your neighborhood is scheduled for inspection. A BPW technician will check for vacuum breakers on hose connections and underground sprinklers. If potential cross connection contamination risks are present, you will be notified by mail. The letter you receive will explain the steps required to bring your residence into compliance with Michigan Law. Penalty for refusing to cooperate with inspections and/or refusing to make needed repairs can be termination of water service as required by law.
