Hope College issued the following announcement on Nov. 30.
An unusual early detection path for the COVID-19 virus — human sewage — is about to get a bigger look from researchers statewide.
The Michigan departments of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy and Health and Human Services have announced more than $6.5 million in grant funding, and more than $3 million in laboratory equipment purchases, for universities across the state and other partners to run 20 three-month pilot programs to test for the COVID-19 virus in wastewater.
The universities and laboratories will work with 29 local public health agencies to provide findings on how much of the COVID-19 virus is showing up in human waste, and where. The information could provide a crucial head start on combatting the virus as hot spots begin to emerge.
