The City of Wayland is seeking a highly motivated individual for the vacant position of Public Works Operator. The position includes work relating to the maintenance and operations of the City’s parks, facilities, properties, vehicles, storm water infrastructure, water treatment and distribution infrastructure, and sewer collection and infrastructure. Minimum requirements include a High School diploma or equivalent, valid Michigan CDL (or ability to obtain one), and a preferred minimum of two years of relevant experience. The City offers a starting pay of $20.50/hour + DOQ, and a competitive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, MERS pension retirement, and generous leave time.

Job Description - Public Works Operator
General Summary:
The equipment operator performs a broad range of manual labor and skilled maintenance functions, including mowing, snow removal, street repair sewer and water drain repair, removal of debris, buildings and grounds maintenance, and equipment maintenance and repair. This person is responsible for the proper and safe operation of all public works equipment and vehicles.
Essential Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties that the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Operates construction or power equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, mower, dump truck, snowplow, jackhammer, concrete and chain saws, sprayer, welder, torch and other light and heavy vehicles and equipment.
2. Performs skilled maintenance and repair tasks involving carpentry, plumbing, concrete, mechanical, electrical, road and utility repair.
3. Performs various tasks related to street maintenance such as pothole patching, snow plowing and removal, line painting, erecting and repairing street/traffic signs and banners, and street light replacement.
4. Performs grounds and parks maintenance tasks such as tree trimming, brush and leaf removal mowing, trash pick-up, restroom cleaning, playground equipment repair, and recreation area preparation.
5. Performs tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the storm sewer system. Cleans, repairs and replaces catch basins.
6. Performs minor equipment maintenance and repair. Assures adherence to preventive maintenance schedules for assigned vehicles. Installs and removes attachment parts including plows, mowers and salters.
7. Assists in the operation of the water and wastewater treatment systems on an as-needed basis. Installs water services. Responds to water system emergencies such as main breaks, assisting in all related duties.
8. Responds to public works emergencies including snow, water main breaks, or other emergencies, at any time of day.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

Education requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training in construction, equipment operations, carpentry or related field.
Ability to obtain applicable water and sewer operator licenses.
Two years relevant experience preferred
A valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain one is required.
Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and precautions involved in equipment operation and public works maintenance of buildings, mechanical systems, constructions projects, and infrastructure systems.
Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, equipment and power tools.
Skill in maintaining and operating the equipment and apparatus of a water plant and wastewater treatment facility.
Ability to perform a variety of maintenance tasks involving carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and road construction skills.
Ability to establish effective working relationship and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with other employees and the public.
Ability to effectively communicate, understands instructions, and follows directions.
Ability to work effectively under stress changes in work priorities, and in emergencies.
Ability to respond to public works emergencies 24 hours per day.
