New Downtown Allegan Business Recipient of Match on Main Grant

New Downtown Allegan Business Recipient of Match on Main Grant

The City of Allegan is excited to share that Heronmark, a new business coming soon to Downtown Allegan, has been selected to receive a $25,000 grant award through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Match on Main grant program.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that 35 communities across Michigan were awarded a total of $807,673 in grants aimed at supporting small businesses to create resiliency and strengthen downtowns. “Michigan’s small businesses and traditional downtowns are the heart of our communities, and with today’s Match on Main grants, we are helping small businesses in both peninsulas grow while further developing unique and inviting places that attract talent and new investment,” said Governor Whitmer. “These grants will help our vibrant downtowns continue to thrive in all corners of the state.”

Of the 35 grant recipients, Heronmark is one of nine new businesses in the state to receive funding. Owners Ben and Katelyn Ramsay intend to use the awarded funds to introduce a new use in a vacant storefront that requires much rehabilitation, both to the interior and exterior of the structure. The renovation plan will result in a rejuvenated façade and modernized interior layout that will serve as a production facility for beer and wine and a tasting room with seating and select food service.

This is the second $25,000 Match on Main grant award secured for a Downtown Allegan business.

“We are so delighted to open our business in Downtown Allegan,” said Katelyn Ramsay, co-owner of Heronmark. “We currently grow our own hops and grapes for beer and wine production on our farm outside of the City of Allegan. This is a significant step in the growth of our business to create products for consumers from our harvested agricultural material.”

City Manager Joel Dye shared, “The enthusiasm to start a new business by young entrepreneurs like Ben and Katelyn and support from state agencies like the MEDC signifies the strong economic foundation that has been nurtured in Downtown Allegan over the past several years.”

Heronmark is expected to open to the public in Downtown Allegan at 132 Hubbard Street in 2023.
