In honor of #AmeriCorpsWeek, we would like to introduce Nick Bruckman who is serving as an AmeriCorps member with Downtown Owosso. Thank you for your service, Nick!

“I was looking to transition to a different career field and had been working with a career coach at Michigan Works. I had identified all sorts of different things that I'd like to be doing, and people and groups I'd like to be working with. One of those groups was local businesses. The career coach said to me, “Nick, you have to narrow down your niche here. What do you want to do?” I said, “I kind of want to do at all”. A few months went by and then she sends me an email out of the blue and told me about the AmeriCorps position with Downtown Owosso which was exactly what I’d been talking about. I went ahead and applied and here I am now.

The best part of downtown Owosso is there's just a certain vibrancy in the air. There's such a feeling of community. I feel it everywhere I go downtown, it's different groups of people coming together to form a larger downtown community.

One of my personal goals for my service is to help create a community that loves and supports one another. That's what I always hope to see and bring to downtown Owosso.

When I go into local businesses, I know the shop owners and I know people who work there. I get to see people that I know but I'm also constantly running into and meeting somebody new as well. There's this nice flow of energy downtown. There's always something new going on and exciting things to look forward to.”
