On June 14, 2023 , the House passed the Save Our Stoves Act that included an amendment offered by Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-04). The Huizenga Amendment increases transparency on the Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. Specifically, the Huizenga Amendment requires the disclosure of meetings the Energy Secretary has held with individuals, groups, or organizations that have ties to the Chinese Communist Party, advocated on regulation or policy changes to limit, restrict or ban, the use of any type of energy, or applied for federal funds. After the Huizenga Amendment was adopted by voice vote, the Save Our Stoves Act passed the House with bipartisan support by a vote of 249-181.

“The American People deserve to know if the Biden Administration’s energy policy decisions are being influenced by entities with ties to the Chinese Communist Party,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga. “My transparency amendment shines a light on the elevated access given by this White House to any groups pushing China-backed, anti-American energy policies.”

Prior to passage of the Save Our Stoves Act, Congressman Huizenga spoke on the House floor about the importance of his amendment and the continued effort of bureaucrats in Washington to pursue a ban on gas stoves. Highlights of Congressman Huizenga’s comments and video of his remarks are available below.

Congressman Bill Huizenga

I rise today in support of my amendment to require the Secretary of Energy to disclose certain stakeholder meetings with any entity that has, one, ties to the People's Republic of China or the Chinese Communist Party. Two, has produced studies regarding or has advocated for policy to limit, restrict, or ban the use of any type of energy. And three, has applied for, or received, federal funds. We have recently seen concerning examples of anti-energy, China-connected entities receiving not just elevated access to the White House and federal agencies but granting of funds as well. Literally, we have been using U.S. taxpayer dollars to help fund them. So, I introduced this amendment because the Biden Administration has not been transparent about who it has been meeting with. And frankly, I believe this Administration has not been honest with the American people about wanting to ban gas stoves.

I have to say, it's one thing for elected officials to be going after a particular appliance or source of energy, but we have a real problem when Washington bureaucrats, unelected bureaucrats aren't being honest about their end goal, and they are the ones making the rules and the regulations. A ban on gas stoves is going to cost the taxpayers. It is going to cost hardworking Americans more, already in an inflationary heightened situation. That's why I wanted to bring this amendment.
