Congressman Bill Huizenga | Rep. Bill Huizenga Official U.S House Headshot
Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) expressed his concerns regarding the federal government's oversight of Gotion Inc.'s plan to construct electric battery plants near Big Rapids, Michigan. This comes as the parent company of Gotion has ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
During the House Financial Services Hearing on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), Congressman Huizenga highlighted the current worries surrounding Gotion and drew attention to a previous failure by CFIUS in the acquisition of A123 Systems by China nearly a decade ago. Congressman Huizenga recalled a conversation earlier this year with Alan Estevez, the Under Secretary of Commerce for the Biden Administration, who admitted that the approval of A123 by CFIUS was "probably not the best decision that CFIUS made."
In his closing remarks, Congressman Huizenga emphasized the need for CFIUS to have the power to safeguard taxpayers and protect national security against the challenges posed by the Chinese Communist Party and other entities. He stated, "It is essential that CFIUS is equipped to address the potential risks associated with the proposal by Gotion Inc. and its ties to the CCP."
