Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) voiced his support for H.R.5641, also known as the Pay Our Troops Act. The legislation, recently introduced by Congresswoman Jennifer Kiggans (R-VA), aims to ensure that members of the military continue to receive their paychecks even in the event of a government shutdown.
Under current law, if a government shutdown were to occur after September 30th, the brave men and women serving in the Armed Forces would not receive their pay. Recognizing the importance of this issue, Congressman Huizenga has joined the efforts to pass the Pay Our Troops Act.
"The paychecks for the men and women defending our nation should not be drawn into funding disputes in Washington," emphasized Congressman Bill Huizenga. "As the September 30th deadline approaches, and the House continues to work through the appropriations process, let’s take the commonsense step of passing the Pay Our Troops Act to ensure our service members receive their paycheck in the event of a government shutdown."
H.R.5641 proposes to allocate the necessary funding from the Department of Treasury to provide pay for the military, including the U.S. Coast Guard, as well as civilian employees and contractors of the Department of Defense. The Secretary of Defense would determine the responsibilities of these individuals, ensuring their contributions to the mission execution, well-being, and readiness of the Armed Forces.
By supporting this legislation, Congressman Huizenga aligns with the goal of safeguarding the financial security of those who bravely defend the nation. The Pay Our Troops Act aims to protect the paychecks of service members from being jeopardized by political disputes in the nation's capital.
