Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, has expressed concern over the Iranian Government's funding of terrorism, particularly its support for Hamas. Speaking at a hearing, Huizenga criticized the Biden Administration's approach to the "Iran Nuclear Deal," stating that it has resulted in a relaxation of sanctions on Iran. This, in turn, has allowed the Iranian regime to access billions of dollars that it can use to finance acts of terror, such as those committed by Hamas.
Highlighting the alarming level of financial support received by Hamas from Iran, Huizenga stated, "Hamas receives approximately $350 million dollars per year in support from Iran or roughly 93% of their total funding." He emphasized the devastating consequences of this support, citing a recent terrorist attack by Hamas that claimed the lives of 30 Americans and more than 1,400 people in Israel.
In his opening remarks, Huizenga called for a clear recognition of the danger posed by Iranian-backed terrorism and underscored the importance of standing with Israel. He stated, "We should all agree that innocent civilians should not be used as political cover... Hamas is no friend to the Palestinian people in my opinion, and the Iranian regime is no friend of ours. We must not waver in our support for our ally Israel."
In response to the situation, Congressman Huizenga introduced the No U.S. Financing for Iran Act earlier this month. This legislation aims to restrict the Iranian regime's ability to support terrorism by blocking its access to the U.S. Financial System.
Furthermore, the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee launched an investigation last week into the Biden Administration's decisions regarding economic sanctions on Iran. A letter seeking clarification on these decisions was sent to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
Huizenga's remarks highlight the urgent need to address the issue of Iranian financing of terrorism, particularly its support for Hamas. The concern expressed by the Congressman underscores the potential consequences of allowing Iran access to significant financial resources. As the investigation unfolds, the implications of the Iranian regime's actions and the importance of supporting Israel remain at the forefront of the discussion.
