Congressman Bill Huizenga has announced the winners of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge (CAC) in Michigan's 4th Congressional District. Jacob Williams, Sahib Dhillon, and Jacob VanDyk from Kalamazoo Christian High School have been recognized for their outstanding achievement. Their app, called WildLife GO, aims to encourage residents of Southwest Michigan to explore and appreciate the local parks and nature areas.
WildLife GO utilizes an innovative point system to engage users and challenge them to identify the diverse range of plants and animals found in Michigan. The app's purpose is to inspire people to get outside and connect with nature while also promoting computer science education and careers.
As winners of the CAC, Jacob Williams, Sahib Dhillon, and Jacob VanDyk will have the opportunity to attend the House of Code event in Washington, DC. This event allows CAC winners to showcase their apps to Members of Congress and demonstrate the impact of computer science in our society.
Congressman Bill Huizenga congratulated the Kalamazoo Christian High School students on their victory, stating, "Their innovative approach to increase engagement with Michigan's natural resources is a great way to utilize computer science and learn more about the vast array of wildlife across Southwest Michigan and throughout our state. I look forward to seeing what these young leaders develop in the future."
In addition to the winners, there were also runners-up recognized for their impressive app creations. Jasjit Chhina and Luke Borozan, seniors from the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center, developed an app called AssignMate. This app helps students study effectively by transforming source material into flashcards. Their dedication and creativity earned them the runner-up position in the competition.
Furthermore, Katherine Risley and Ellie Reeves, juniors at Kalamazoo Central High School, secured third place with their informative website titled "All About PFAS." This website highlights the dangers of PFAS and its impact on Southwest Michigan, the state, and the nation.
The Congressional App Challenge aims to motivate and inspire students to learn coding skills while fostering their interest in computer science. It provides a platform for young innovators to showcase their talent and make a positive impact in their communities.
The achievements of these students demonstrate the power of computer science and its potential to address real-world challenges. Their dedication and creativity serve as an inspiration to other aspiring young individuals who may consider a career in technology.
Congratulations to all the winners and participants of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge.
