Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) has voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, accusing him of knowingly and willfully subverting the nation's laws and violating his oath of office. Huizenga stated, "Tonight, Secretary Mayorkas was impeached for knowingly and willfully subverting our nation's laws and violating his oath of office."
Huizenga alleges that Mayorkas has violated provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act, specifically the provision requiring the arrest of individuals who are inadmissible to the US due to criminal backgrounds or charges related to terrorism in their home country. According to Huizenga, Mayorkas has also ignored the law by implementing a "catch and release" program, allowing individuals illegally in the United States to stay for years without facing the required legal proceedings.
Since President Biden assumed office, there have been over 8.3 million illegal crossings into the US. Huizenga argues that Mayorkas's actions have circumvented immigration laws and undermined the trust of the American people. He claims that Mayorkas's blatant disregard for the law has exacerbated the crisis along the southern border.
Huizenga emphasizes his decision to vote for impeachment as a means to restore accountability and hold Mayorkas responsible for his actions. He concludes, "For these reasons, I voted to restore accountability and impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas."
It remains to be seen how this impeachment will progress and what the consequences may be for Secretary Mayorkas.
