Grand Valley State men's basketball head coach Cornell Mann has announced the addition of Sterling Johnson to the Lakers' coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2024-25 season.

Johnson joins GVSU after spending one season as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech, where he was responsible for assisting with player development, film breakdown, and scouting reports. He earned his degree this summer in Agricultural and Life Sciences with a focus on Education.

Before his tenure at Virginia Tech, Johnson spent one year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northwood. His previous coaching roles include positions at Schoolcraft College, University of Northwestern Ohio, and Defiance College. Additionally, Johnson is the founder of the Sterling Johnson Fundamental Basketball Camp, an annual camp targeted at athletes in the Clinton Township and Mount Clemens area.

Johnson was a four-year letter winner at Saginaw Valley State from 2012-16. During his time with the Cardinals, he appeared in 108 games. In his senior campaign in 2015-16, Johnson was part of the winningest team in program history, reaching the Elite Eight while shooting 46% from the field and 43% from three-point range.
