Grand Valley State wins season opener against Ashland

The No. 7 Grand Valley State women's soccer team commenced the 2024 season with a home victory against No. 9 Ashland, winning 1-0 on Thursday at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers begin their season with a record of 1-0, while the Eagles fall to 0-1.

GVSU outshot Ashland 11-7 overall and had a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The decisive goal came in the 47th minute when Emma Chudik received a pass from Sarah Fromm in the middle of the box. Chudik's left-footed shot was initially deflected by the Eagle goalkeeper but ultimately bounced into the net.

Alli French led GVSU with two shots on goal. Kacy Lauer contributed two shots, one of which was on target, while Ryann Fetty also recorded two shots. Chudik secured the game-winning goal with her sole shot attempt. Daan Louwerse and Mackenzie Ford played all 90 minutes in defense for the Lakers. Goalkeeper Isabel Imes started and achieved her first shutout of the year, making one save.
