Grand Valley State women's soccer wins GLIAC opener against Northern Michigan

The No. 1 Grand Valley State women's soccer team began their conference schedule with a 1-0 victory at Northern Michigan on Friday afternoon. The Lakers now hold a record of 4-0-1 for the season and are 1-0 in the GLIAC.

GVSU secured the game's only goal in the 65th minute, courtesy of Ella Kleiver. Taylor Reid executed a run on the right side and delivered a cross that Kleiver deflected past the goalkeeper for the decisive score. This marked Kleiver's first goal of the season, while Reid recorded her second assist.

The Lakers registered 14 shots with six on target, compared to Northern Michigan's 19 shots with seven on goal. The Wildcats had a slight edge in corner kicks, leading 7-6.

Kacy Lauer led GVSU with three shots, two of which were on target. Kennedy Bearden also had three shots, while Ryann Fetty contributed two shots with one on goal. Vesna Dennison and Alli French each added one shot on goal. Kleiver's goal was her first of the season, and Reid’s assist was her team-leading second of the season. Kacy Lauer, Daan Louwerse, Danielle Aitken, and Ryann Fetty played all 90 minutes of action. Cailynn Junk started in net for GVSU and achieved her second shutout of the season with a season-high seven saves.

The Lakers will complete their GLIAC opening weekend against Michigan Tech in Houghton, Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 22). Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM. The game will be streamed live on FloSports.
