Grand Valley State women’s soccer team continues GLIAC action

The No. 1 Grand Valley State women's soccer team will continue their GLIAC action with an away game against Saginaw Valley State on Friday, September 27, at 1:00 PM in University Center, Michigan. The Lakers will then return home to host Parkside on Sunday, September 29, also at 1:00 PM for senior day.

GVSU began their GLIAC schedule last weekend with victories over Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech, improving their season record to 5-0-1 and their conference record to 2-0. Kennedy Bearden and Cailynn Junk received GLIAC player of the week honors for offensive and defensive performances respectively. Bearden scored both goals in the win against Michigan Tech, reaching her 100th career point in a Laker uniform. Junk recorded her second shutout of the season with seven saves against Northern Michigan and five saves against Michigan Tech.

The Lakers are ranked number one in the United Soccer Coaches national poll for the second consecutive week. They have outscored opponents 8-3 this season, including three clean sheets. Kennedy Bearden, Emma Chudik, and Alli French each have two goals this season. Bearden and Chudik lead the team with five points each. Goalkeeper Cailynn Junk has a record of 4-0-1 with two shutouts and has made 19 saves.

Saginaw Valley State holds a season record of 3-3 and is 1-1 in GLIAC play. The Cardinals opened their conference schedule last weekend with a loss to Purdue Northwest followed by a win at Roosevelt. Rileigh Garbarz leads Saginaw Valley State with two goals and three assists for seven points this season. Medi Bajis has scored two goals on eleven shots while goalkeeper Lainey Garbarz has made five starts, recording eighteen saves and three clean sheets.

Parkside enters the weekend with an overall record of 2-3-0 and a GLIAC mark of 0-1-0 after opening their conference schedule with a home loss to Ferris State. All five games played by Parkside have ended in a scoreline of 1-0. They will face Davenport on Friday before traveling to Allendale on Sunday. Emily Mikkelson and Ava Rizzitano have each scored one goal for Parkside while goalkeeper Lola Minic has produced two clean sheets making twenty-four saves.
