Grand Valley State University's football team is set to face Davenport University in the 2024 GLIAC opener on Saturday, October 5. The game will take place at Davenport's home field, with kickoff scheduled for noon. The Lakers are coming off a strong performance against West Florida, where they secured a 31-7 victory.

GVSU holds an impressive record in GLIAC openers, boasting a 36-14 all-time record. Their recent form has been dominant, with the Lakers winning their last three encounters against Davenport by a combined score of 129-7. The team's defense has been particularly effective, limiting opponents to minimal yardage and achieving high rankings nationally in several defensive categories.

Head Coach Scott Wooster's squad has shown strength on both sides of the ball this season. The Laker rush offense ranks third nationally, while their defense is second in preventing rushing yards. In their last game against West Florida, key players like Niles King and Jimmy Downs contributed significantly to the defensive effort with multiple tackles for loss and quarterback sacks.

Offensively, running back Khalil Eichelberger was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against West Florida, where he rushed for 129 yards and scored two touchdowns. Quarterback Avery Moore also played a crucial role by contributing both through passing and rushing.

The Lakers have maintained a consistent level of success over the years, having won ten or more games in nineteen seasons throughout their history. They have also claimed four national championships since 2002.
