Former Grand Valley State athlete Chris Hammer achieved a significant milestone by winning gold in the PTS5 Para Triathlon at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The event took place on Sunday, September 2, at Pont Alexandre III in France.
Hammer completed the triathlon with a total time of 58:44. His performance included a swim time of 12:03 for 750 meters, placing him eighth among competitors. He excelled in the cycling segment with a time of 29:06 over 20 kilometers, securing first place in this part of the race. He finished strong with a run time of 15:59 for five kilometers.
GVSU Head Coach Jerry Baltes expressed pride in Hammer's accomplishment. "We are so happy and proud of Chris's incredible achievement," Baltes stated. "After two fourth-place finishes in the last two Paralympics, it's great to see Chris's hard work and sacrifices come together with a gold medal."
This victory marks Hammer's first Paralympic medal after competing three times before without medaling. In previous games, he participated in PT4 and PTS5 Para Triathlons and placed fourth both times. His debut at the London Paralympics in 2012 saw him compete in track events including the 1500m, Marathon, and 800m.
Reflecting on his past performances, Hammer told World Triathlon, "If it wasn't for those fourth-place finishes, I probably wouldn't have been as motivated to race this time around."
During his college career from 2004-08 at GVSU, Hammer earned All-American honors five times across cross country and steeplechase events. He played a key role in leading GVSU to multiple titles and was inducted into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.
The triumph represents a culmination of years of dedication for Hammer.
