Grand Valley State University secured a decisive 49-17 victory over Northern Michigan in a GLIAC matchup at Lubbers Stadium. The Lakers improved their record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, marking their 15th consecutive regular season win and extending their GLIAC winning streak to 17 games.

The game began with Grand Valley State opting to receive the kickoff, which resulted in sophomore wide receiver Kellen Reed returning it 92 yards for a touchdown. Mathew Bacik successfully added the first of his seven extra points, giving the Lakers an early lead. "The kickoff return for a TD was the third of Reed's career," noted GVSU officials, emphasizing its significance as one of the longest returns in the university's history.

Junior linebacker Anthony Cardamone made an immediate impact by forcing a fumble on Northern Michigan's second play. This set up senior quarterback Avery Moore's 29-yard touchdown run, further extending GVSU's lead. Despite Northern Michigan managing a field goal, Grand Valley State responded with an 83-yard drive culminating in Syone Usma-Harper’s debut touchdown.

As the game progressed into the second half, GVSU maintained its momentum by forcing another fumble on the kickoff and quickly capitalizing with Kenneth Jones' two-yard touchdown run. Notable plays included Derrick Woods' 18-yard scoring run and Isaiah Johnson’s fumble return for a touchdown.

The Lakers amassed 288 rushing yards and five touchdowns during the match. Avery Moore led with 92 rushing yards and a touchdown. Khalil Eichelberger contributed significantly with both rushing yards and scores, while Usma-Harper also added to the tally. In passing attempts, Drew Peterson made two catches totaling 24 yards.

Defensively, Grand Valley State held Northern Michigan to just over 200 total offensive yards without allowing any completed passes from NMU (0-for-5). Kobe Hayward recorded notable defensive statistics with seven tackles and multiple tackles for loss.

Following this victory, Grand Valley State is set to face Saginaw Valley State next Saturday at University Center.
