Grand Valley State University's wrestling team, ranked 16th, secured two victories at the NCAA Super Region 3 duals hosted by Tiffin University. The Lakers narrowly defeated Lake Erie College, ranked 5th, with a score of 22-21 and achieved a more decisive win over Thomas More with a score of 42-15. This marks an improvement to a 9-2 record for GVSU in its first varsity wrestling season in over three decades. The team is scheduled to compete next at the Notre Dame Duals on January 18.
In their match against Lake Erie, GVSU initially trailed by 18 points after the first four matches. However, they managed to turn the tide with strategic wins. A forfeit victory was awarded to them at the 157-pound category. Freshman Trammel Robinson followed with a crucial 2-0 win at 165 pounds. Josh Kenny also benefited from a forfeit win at 174 pounds, while senior Seth Konynenbelt achieved an impressive major decision victory of 8-0 at the 184-pound category. Sophomore Wyatt Miller contributed with an 8-1 win at the 197-pound class, giving GVSU a lead before entering the heavyweight match where freshman Brett Boudreaux lost narrowly by a score of 2-0.
Against Thomas More, Grand Valley State collected seven bonus point wins leading to their overall victory. Robinson, Kenny, Konynenbelt, and Miller each recorded two wins and six bonus point victories throughout the day.
