The GVSU women's basketball team, top-seeded in the Midwest region, faced off against eighth-seed Trevecca Nazarene in the NCAA Tournament. The Lakers overcame a slow start to dominate the second half, securing a 63-25 victory.
Initially, the Lakers took an early lead with an 11-3 run, sparked by Lexi Plitzuweit's three-pointer. However, Trevecca Nazarene fought back to close the gap to 11-9 by the end of the first quarter. The Trojans then went on an 8-2 run in the second quarter to take their first lead at 17-16 and maintained it until Avery Zeinstra's late three-pointer reduced their lead to one point at halftime.
In the third quarter, Grand Valley State University took control of the game. They outscored Trevecca Nazarene 25-6 during this period, starting with a 13-0 run that put them ahead 34-22. The Lakers hit five three-pointers and entered the final quarter with a commanding lead.
Zeinstra continued her strong performance in the fourth quarter with another three-pointer that extended GVSU's lead beyond 20 points. Trevecca Nazarene was unable to recover from this deficit as GVSU advanced comfortably into the semifinals.
Abrie Cabana led GVSU's offense with 12 points. Rylie Bisballe recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. Paige Vanstee contributed eight points and seven rebounds while Lexi Plitzuweit and Hadley Miller each added seven points. Ava Scanlon provided eight rebounds off the bench.
GVSU will face Northern Michigan in the semifinals tomorrow night at 7:30 PM.
