For the first time since 2005, the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's basketball team will host an NCAA Tournament game. The Lakers are the top seed in the Midwest Regional and will face eighth-seeded Trevecca Nazarene on Friday at 5:00 PM.
The Lakers have consistently reached NCAA postseason play for nine consecutive seasons, securing two regional titles and advancing to the Final Four twice under head coach Mike Williams. Williams holds a 14-7 record in NCAA tournaments. GVSU previously claimed a National Championship during the 2005-06 season.
Last weekend, GVSU dominated the GLIAC Tournament by defeating Purdue Northwest, Parkside, and Northern Michigan. These victories extended their overall record to 29-2 and continued their winning streak to 14 games as they enter the NCAA Tournament. Rylie Bisballe was named GLIAC Tournament MVP with averages of 16 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, including two double-doubles. Hadley Miller contributed significantly by scoring an average of 10 points per game and defending against top perimeter players from opposing teams. Nicole Kamin averaged 13 points across three games, while Abrie Cabana scored 14 points in the championship match.
Trevecca Nazarene returns to the tournament as an eighth seed after finishing as runner-up in the GMAC Tournament with a season record of 19-11. Last year they reached the regional semifinals as a fourth seed but have lost four of their last seven games leading into this year's tournament. The Trojans boast a strong offense that scores an average of 75.8 points per game, ranking them fourteenth nationally, with senior guard Keeley Carter leading at an average of 21.3 points per game on shooting percentages of .473/.373/.833. Faith Wilken, Konnor Gambrell, and Lili Wilken also contribute double figures in scoring alongside being key rebounders for TNU.
This matchup marks the first-ever meeting between GVSU and Trevecca Nazarene.
