The GVSU men's golf team commenced their spring season at the Lander Bearcat Classic in Greenwood, South Carolina. After completing one round and having the second round suspended due to darkness, the Lakers are positioned third with a score of -16.
Flagler College leads the tournament at -24, achieving -16 in the first round and continuing with -8 with a few holes remaining in the second round. Barton College holds second place at -19, three strokes ahead of GVSU. The Lakers recorded a 283 (-5) in the first round and improved to -11 through the second round before it was halted. Host Lander University is fourth at -14, while Wingate University completes the top five at eleven under.
GVSU's Drew Coble and Nick Krueger are tied for fourth after day one, both eight under par for the tournament. Krueger posted rounds of 70 (-2) and 66 (-6), making seven birdies in the first round and four more in the second along with two eagles. Coble shot a 67 (-5) initially and has one hole left to complete in his second round, having sunk 11 birdies throughout the day.
Charlie Cooley is tied for 27th place after shooting a 71 (-1) in his first round but did not finish his second round, ending at one under par. He made two birdies and an eagle initially and added two more birdies before play was suspended. Manuel Cue Vargas trails Cooley by two strokes, tying for 40th at one over par. He shot a 75 (+3) initially with two birdies and had made two more birdies plus an eagle in his incomplete second round.
Andrew Gwilliams recorded a score of 76 in his first outing, making one birdie then adding four more before suspension; he stands tied for 58th at three over par. Bryce Wheeler shares 83rd position (+7), scoring a first-round total of 76 (+4), with three initial birdies followed by another trio during halted play.
The Lakers will resume competition tomorrow by concluding their second-round play followed by an additional final round.
