Grand Valley State men's tennis opens GLIAC play with win over Purdue Northwest

The Grand Valley State men's tennis team began their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schedule with a victory, defeating Purdue Northwest 5-2 on Friday afternoon. This win brings the Lakers' season record to 9-4.

In doubles competition, Grand Valley State secured the point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Sean Miller and Victor Lopes achieved a 6-4 victory at the top doubles spot, while Lawrence Ivanov and Stephen Claassen earned a narrow 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles. However, Chimo Minguez and Jorge Ruiz were defeated 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles match.

During singles play, Denys Zamaraiev won his match in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-2 at the top position. Sean Miller also won in straight sets with a scoreline of 7-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Chimo Minguez claimed a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles with scores of 6-4, 6-4, while Jorge Ruiz added another win for the team with scores of 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. Victor Lopes lost in a challenging three-set match at No. 3 singles, ending with scores of 1-6, 6-1, and finally falling short at 4-6. Stephen Claassen also faced defeat after three sets in the No. 6 singles match with scores of 3-6, winning the second set at 6-1 but losing the third set narrowly at an extended score of 8-10.

Looking ahead to their next challenge, the Lakers will return home for their first GLIAC home match this season against Davenport on Saturday. The event is scheduled to start at Premier Athletic and Tennis Center with first serve set for tomorrow evening.
