GVSU men's golf leads Ralph Hargett Memorial after first day

The GVSU men's golf team is making a strong showing at the Ralph Hargett Memorial in Monroe, North Carolina. After the first day, which included two rounds of play, GVSU leads the tournament by 11 strokes and has three players occupying the top spots on the leaderboard.

GVSU's team shot impressive rounds of 282 and 278, putting them at 16 under par. Tusculum follows in second place at five under, while Wingate holds third place at three over par. Carson-Newman stands fourth with a score of four over par, and Belmont Abbey rounds out the top five with scores of 288 and 297, totaling nine over par.

Drew Coble from GVSU leads the individual field of 96 golfers after shooting rounds of 67 (-5) and 70 (-2), positioning him at seven under for the tournament. "Coble made six birdies in round one and five more in round two to hold a three-stroke lead on second-place," noted sources from the event.

In second place are fellow Lakers Nick Krueger and Manuel Cue Vargas, both sitting at four under after two rounds. Krueger recorded rounds of 72 (E) and 68 (-4), achieving five birdies and an eagle. Cue Vargas made nine birdies across his rounds of 73 (+1) and 67 (-5). Bryce Wheeler is tied for 17th with scores of one over par from his rounds of 72 (E) and 73 (+1), while Charlie Cooley sits tied for 32nd after shooting rounds of 71 (-1) and 77 (+5).

The final round is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at nine o'clock as GVSU aims to secure their title defense.
