GVSU men's golf team sets new record to win Lander Bearcat Classic

The GVSU men's golf team has begun their spring season with a record-setting performance at the Lander Bearcat Classic in Greenwood, South Carolina. The team shot an impressive 828 (-36) over 54 holes, marking the lowest score in program history and winning the event by a tiebreaker.

In the final round, the Lakers shot 271 (-17), climbing from third place to tie with Lander at -36. The victory was secured through a tiebreaker scorecard. Flagler took third place at twenty-eight under par, Barton finished fourth at -26, and Wingate completed the top five at -21.

Drew Coble led the Lakers by claiming the individual title. He birdied the final hole to break a tie for first place, finishing at -13 with a final round of 67 (-5). "Coble ended at -13 with a final round of 67 (-5), sinking five birdies." Nick Krueger secured fourth place with a round of 69 (-3), making five birdies and an eagle. Charlie Cooley climbed 14 spots to finish tied for 12th at seven under par without bogeying and making five birdies in his final round of 67 (-5).

Manuel Cue Vargas tied for 22nd after shooting a final round of 68 (-4) with seven birdies, concluding the tournament at five under. Andrew Gwilliams carded a final round of 71 (-1) with two birdies and an eagle, ending tied for 52nd at two over par. Bryce Wheeler made five birdies in his round of 70 (-2), including four consecutive ones, finishing tied for 66th at +6.

Next on their schedule is a trip to Georgia on Friday where they will compete against North Georgia in a one-day Medal Matchplay event.
