The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) football Spanish language play-by-play broadcast has been recognized as the 2023 Statewide "Best" sports play-by-play broadcast by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB). This marks a significant achievement for GVSU, which introduced a dedicated Spanish language broadcast for all home football games in its inaugural season.
The broadcasts were managed by Elio Benitez and Miguel Esparza, reaching audiences across Michigan through stations such as La Ponderosa 93.3 FM and 810 AM in Grand Rapids, along with 103.1 FM and 1080 AM in Midland/Lansing.
Deputy Director of Athletics Doug Lipinski expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, "It is a tremendous honor to be recognized as the best sports play-by-play broadcast in Michigan in 2023." He acknowledged the contributions of Esparza, Benitez, and producer Jeremy Bolker in making the broadcasts successful. Lipinski added, "I am thankful to have the talented and hard-working broadcast team of Miguel Esparza and Elio Benitez as part of the GVSU athletics family."
GVSU stands out as the only school in Michigan and within NCAA Division II football to offer a dedicated Spanish language play-by-play service. Miguel Esparza shared his feelings on receiving the award: "I am deeply humbled and honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award." Elio Benitez also expressed his appreciation: "Since the first day I set foot on the GVSU campus, I knew this experience was going to be special."
The duo will accept their award at the Broadcast Excellence Awards Show at Sound Board Theater City Hotel in Detroit on April 6, 2024.
