Grand Valley State University (GVSU) has been ranked fourth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 2024 preseason poll, accumulating 566 points and one first-place vote. Harding University secured the top spot with 672 points and 25 first-place votes. GVSU has consistently been in the top 10 of national preseason polls since 2002, achieving a top five ranking on 17 occasions and a top three ranking 13 times.

The Lakers are set to begin their season on September 5 at Lubbers Stadium against Central State. Last year, they finished with an impressive record of 11-2, reaching the NCAA quarterfinals.

For the upcoming season, GVSU will see the return of key players across all positions. On offense, seniors Gabe Brown and Kyler Blake-Jones lead a strong offensive line alongside junior Brett Weaver and sophomores Jaylin Caldwell and Jeff Burton. Senior tight ends Gavin Cossou and Drew Peterson bring All-GLIAC honors to their roles. The receiving corps includes senior Cody Tierney, Darrell Johnson, and Kyle Nott—all All-GLIAC honorees—with Nott also leading as a rusher. The special teams feature standout performers like Johnson and sophomore Kellen Reed in punt-kickoff returns.

Defensively, GVSU's lineup is fortified by All-GLIAC defensive end Niles King and tackle Jack Gilchrist among others. Junior Anthony Cardamone leads a talented linebacker unit while senior Ian Kennelly stands out in safety position.

The team is supported by junior punter Trace Hrgich who earned All-GLIAC recognition along with senior long snapper David Kreske who is returning for his fourth year.
