GVSU men's golf team defeats North Georgia in close match play event

The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) men's golf team faced off against North Georgia in a match play event in Homer, Georgia. The Lakers, ranked fourth, competed against the top-ranked Nighthawks with six golfers paired for one-on-one matchups over two rounds. GVSU claimed victory in the first round 3-2-1, while North Georgia took the second round by the same scoreline. This led to a tiebreaker based on total scores of the day, where GVSU emerged victorious with an overall score of 862, two strokes ahead of North Georgia.

In the first round, GVSU's Drew Coble, Manuel Cue Vargas, and Bryce Wheeler won their respective matchups. Coble defeated North Georgia's leading golfer by four strokes with a score of 71-75. Cue Vargas achieved an event-low score of 68 to win his matchup 68-73. Wheeler secured his victory by one stroke at 72-73. Andrew Gwilliams ended his matchup tied as both players shot rounds of 78. Nick Krueger and Charlie Cooley played competitively but were defeated; Krueger lost by one stroke with a score of 72, and Cooley fell short at 70-73.

During the second round, Coble and Cooley triumphed in their matches again. Cooley won by four strokes with a score of 72, while Coble shot a 72 to secure victory by one stroke. Krueger finished tied after shooting a 69. Despite shooting a solid round of 69, Wheeler lost by three strokes. Gwilliams and Cue Vargas also fell short by three strokes each with scores of 71 and 75 respectively.

The Lakers will take a break until March 18-19 when they head to North Carolina for the Ralph Hargett Memorial.
