The Grand Valley State men's basketball team has advanced to the GLIAC semifinals following a narrow victory over Michigan Tech, with a final score of 79-76. The game took place on Wednesday night, bringing the Lakers' season record to 15-14. Their next challenge will be against Northern Michigan in Marquette this Saturday.
Mason Docks was instrumental in leading the Lakers, scoring 21 points with an impressive shooting performance both from the field and at the free throw line. Marius Grazulis contributed significantly with his sixth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and securing 10 rebounds. Ethan Alderink also scored 16 points without missing a shot from the field. Britain Harris and Trevon Gunter each added 11 points to the team's total.
The game began with Michigan Tech taking an early lead, starting on an 8-2 run within the first four minutes. However, Gunter's efforts gave Grand Valley State their first lead at 13-10. Despite this momentum, Michigan Tech managed to tie the game multiple times during the first half and went into halftime leading by five points.
In the second half, both teams exchanged baskets consistently until GVSU regained control after a three-pointer by Alderink. The competition remained fierce as both teams continued trading leads throughout much of the second half.
With just under two minutes remaining, Michigan Tech held a slight advantage before Docks tied it up again for GVSU with a layup. As time wound down, Harris made crucial free throws that helped secure Grand Valley State's win despite Michigan Tech's attempts to level or take back control of the match.
Looking ahead, GVSU is set to face Northern Michigan in what promises to be another challenging encounter as they compete for a spot in further rounds of the tournament. Northern Michigan earned their place by defeating Purdue Northwest earlier in their quarterfinal matchup.
