The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's soccer team secured a 3-0 victory against McKendree in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The match took place on Friday morning at Northern Michigan's campus, advancing the Lakers to the second round scheduled for Sunday.
With this win, GVSU improves its season record to 12-3-6 and boasts an all-time NCAA Tournament record of 61-12. The Lakers dominated offensively, outshooting McKendree 17-12 overall and 11-4 on goal, while preventing any corner kicks from their opponents.
Avery Lockwood opened the scoring in the 29th minute after receiving a cross from Ella Kleiver, marking her third goal of the season and third game-winning goal. Before halftime, Stephanie Sturgeon scored her first goal of the season by heading in a corner kick delivered by Lockwood. The Lakers ended the first half with an 11-5 shot advantage and a two-goal lead.
In the second half, Sturgeon netted another goal in the 60th minute following a well-placed corner by Sophia Morgan. Sturgeon completed her performance with two goals over 73 minutes. Lockwood contributed with both a goal and an assist during her 60 minutes on the field. Assists were also credited to Kleiver and Morgan.
Goalkeeper Isabel Imes started for GVSU, making four saves and securing her fifth shutout of the season.
