The Grand Valley State women's soccer team secured a place in the Midwest Regional Championship by defeating Maryville 2-1 in the NCAA Tournament. The match took place on Sunday, November 19, 2023, in Marquette, Michigan. With this victory, the Lakers improved their season record to 13-3-6 and are set to face Ashland in two weeks.

Throughout the game, the Lakers outshot Maryville with a total of 20 attempts compared to Maryville's 14. Of these shots, 12 were on target for Grand Valley State against five for Maryville. The Lakers also had seven corner kicks while Maryville had five. Possession was contested between both teams early on.

Grand Valley State opened the scoring in the first half at the 34th minute when Stephanie Sturgeon headed in a goal from a corner kick delivered by Sophia Morgan. This marked Sturgeon's third goal of the weekend and gave her team a lead that they maintained until halftime.

In the second half, Ryann Fetty extended the Lakers' lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 63rd minute following an assist from Abby Winn who received a pass from Taylor Reid. However, Maryville quickly responded within a minute with a long-range shot that reduced their deficit back to one goal.

Despite this quick response from Maryville, Grand Valley State managed to defend their lead and secure their advancement with Fetty contributing significantly by scoring what turned out to be the winning goal during her time on field which lasted for 81 minutes.

Sturgeon played throughout all 90 minutes and contributed her third goal over two days of competition while Morgan and Winn each provided assists during this game. Additionally Claire Breault made three shots one being on target as well as Isabel Imes starting as goalkeeper making four saves overall during playtime against opponents' attempts at equalizing scoreline further into proceedings.
