The GVSU women's lacrosse team secured a significant victory against Northern Michigan, marking the start of their GLIAC play with a decisive 17-6 win. This triumph extends the Lakers' impressive streak to 30 consecutive GLIAC regular season victories, setting a new conference record.
The match began with the Wildcats scoring first, but GVSU responded with an 11-0 run by halftime. Maddy Champagne initiated the scoring for GVSU, followed by two goals from Delaney Smith and another from Hailey Crittenden just before the end of the first period. In the second quarter, Ashleigh Rothe, Champagne, Sydney Stone, and Zoe Ziegler each contributed to maintaining the lead. Smith provided assists for goals by Crittenden and Ella Boose before Crittenden added another goal to conclude the half.
Northern Michigan dominated the third quarter with four unanswered goals but was unable to sustain their momentum into the fourth quarter. After an initial goal from Northern Michigan in the final period, GVSU responded with six straight goals. Champagne's performance was notable as she reached 200 career points during this game, becoming only the fourth player in program history to achieve this milestone.
Champagne led GVSU with five goals and five draw controls while Crittenden scored four times. Boose, Stone, and Smith each found the net twice; Rothe and Ziegler also added one goal apiece. Defensively strong throughout, GVSU held their opponents under ten goals for a tenth consecutive game thanks in part to eight combined saves from Kaylyn Cater and Sarah Krause.
GVSU will continue their road trip as they face Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday at 1:00 PM Eastern Time.
