In Allendale, Michigan, the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's lacrosse team secured their 11th regular season Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) title with a decisive 13-3 victory over Davenport. This win also marked the completion of an undefeated home schedule for the Lakers, bringing their overall record to 14-1 and maintaining a perfect 5-0 in league play.
The Lakers have previously claimed the GLIAC regular season title in 2013 through 2019 and consecutively from 2021 to 2023. They will enter next week's conference tournament as the top seed.
The match began with a low-scoring first half, where GVSU scored all four goals. Maddy Champagne contributed two goals, assisted by Delaney Smith on one occasion. Sydney Stone added two more goals with an assist from Zoe Ziegler, giving GVSU a lead at halftime.
Stone opened the second half with another goal before Davenport responded with two consecutive goals, narrowing the score to 5-2. The Lakers answered back with goals from Ainsley Shilling and Hailey Crittenden, both assisted by Grace Maddox. Kate DeYoung and Ziegler each scored to end the third quarter at 9-2 in favor of GVSU.
Continuing their momentum into the fourth quarter, the Lakers scored three more times through Champagne, Shilling, and Crittenden. Assists were credited to Ziegler, Champagne, and Smith during this run. Although Davenport managed one more goal, Crittenden sealed the game with her final goal.
Hailey Crittenden, Maddy Champagne, and Sydney Stone each achieved hat tricks. Ainsley Shilling scored twice while Zoe Ziegler and Kate DeYoung each added one goal. In assists, Ziegler, Delaney Smith, and Grace Maddox had two each; Champagne and Ashleigh Rothe provided one assist apiece.
Defensively, GVSU forced 20 turnovers with six players causing multiple turnovers. Elora Ferrie led with four turnovers; Crittenden, Champagne, Stone, Waeghe had three each; Rothe had two. Champagne collected seven groundballs; Hope Leinen gathered four; Ella Boose and Crittenden had two each. Kaylyn Cater made three saves securing the win as goalkeeper.
Looking ahead, GVSU will conclude their regular season against Davenport once more on Monday in Caledonia for a rescheduled match-up earlier this season.
