The Grand Valley State men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to compete against the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, October 19. The meet will be held at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center, starting at 2 p.m.
According to pre-season rankings announced by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), the Laker women's team is ranked second nationally, while the men's team holds the fourth spot.
The men's squad travels to Indiana following victories over Calvin University and Saginaw Valley State last weekend. Matt Bosch was named GLIAC swimmer of the week after winning the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 200 relay events. His time of 43.79 in the 100-yard freestyle set a new record at Venema Aquatic Center.
The women’s team also comes into this meet with two wins, having defeated Calvin with a score of 210-88 and Saginaw Valley with a score of 228-69. Sara Alvarez received GLIAC swimmer honors for her first-place finishes in the 200-yard IM, 100-yard breaststroke, and 200 breaststroke. Maddie Kooistra earned diver of the week recognition with scores of 254.95 in the one-meter dive and 253.50 in the three-meter dive.
Coach Andy commented on their current national standings: "With our teams in the top four at the national level, men's being four and women's being two, it's exciting to see. We haven't had many competitions yet so I don't really know what it means yet but you know we'll go out there and race as hard as we can and dive as well as we can each week." He added that facing Indianapolis will be a significant test due to their close rankings: "Indianapolis is right up there with us in the rankings so it will be a great opportunity for us to see what we're made of here tomorrow."
