Grand Valley softball team loses doubleheader against Saginaw Valley

The Grand Valley State University softball team, ranked ninth nationally, faced two defeats in a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State University on Sunday. These losses bring the Lakers' season record to 22-9.

In the first game, Saginaw Valley State secured an early lead with a bases-loaded walk in the opening inning. The Cardinals extended their advantage in the fifth inning with two additional runs from a sacrifice flyout and a solo home run, leading 3-0. The Lakers managed to score in the sixth inning when Morgan Spicer walked and was advanced by Kelsey Komorous's double. Jenna Ballard then brought Spicer home with a sacrifice flyout to center field.

Despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, GVSU could not level the score. Genesis Eggart pitched all seven innings for GVSU, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four batters. The Lakers had five hits from five different players: Morgan Spicer (1-1 with one run scored and two walks), Hannah Hollister, Kelsey Komorous, MaryJane Goodman, and Eliana Eiland each contributed one hit.

In game two, after three scoreless innings, Saginaw Valley State took control with a solo home run in the fourth inning. They added another run in the fifth through an RBI single and further extended their lead with another solo home run and an RBI single by the sixth inning to win 4-0.

GVSU recorded four hits during this game: Carsyn Segorski had a pinch-hit single down the right field line; Morgan Spicer, Jenna Ballard, and Megan Koenigshof each went 1-3 at bat.

The Lakers are scheduled to play again on Wednesday when they travel to Detroit for another GLIAC doubleheader against Wayne State. They will return home next Sunday to host Ferris State.
