The Grand Valley State softball team secured a season sweep over Davenport with two victories on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers emerged victorious in the first game with a score of 7-0 and followed up with a 7-2 win in the second game, improving their season record to 28-13 and their GLIAC record to 11-7.
In the opening game, GVSU quickly took control by scoring four runs in the first inning. Hannah Hollister initiated the offense with a single and subsequent steal, setting up Morgan Spicer for an infield single that advanced Hollister to third base. Kelsey Komorous then drove in Hollister with a single to right field. Megan Koenigshof added another run before MaryJane Goodman tripled, bringing home Ballard and Koenigshof.
The Lakers extended their lead in the fourth inning when Eliana Eiland started off with an infield single. Komorous contributed her second RBI of the game with a hit to left field. The team sealed their victory by adding two more runs in the seventh inning, thanks to hits from Liberti Fair and Goodman.
Ashley Platek pitched all seven innings of game one, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out five batters. Komorous went 4-for-4 at bat, earning two RBIs and scoring twice. Goodman had two hits including a double, three RBIs, and scored once.
In game two, GVSU continued their strong start as Hollister walked and stole second base before Komorous drove her home for her third RBI of the day. Jasmine Mauk added another run with an RBI single in the second inning. Although Davenport managed to tie the game with a home run, GVSU regained their lead through Komorous' efforts.
Komorous' performance was pivotal as she brought Hollister home again in the third inning and delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning. Mauk further increased GVSU's lead with a two-run homerun in the fifth inning.
Genesis Eggart pitched throughout game two, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out eight batters. Mauk finished 3-for-4 at bat with a home run and three RBIs, while Komorous went 2-for-4 contributing four RBIs.
GVSU is set to conclude their regular season at home against Wayne State on April 21st.
