The Grand Valley State softball team secured a doubleheader victory against Wayne State on Sunday at the GVSU Softball Field. This win extends their streak to seven games, positioning them first in the GLIAC standings with a 13-7 record and an overall season record of 30-13.
In the first game, the Lakers claimed a 9-1 victory over six innings. Jasmine Mauk initiated scoring with a single that brought home Kenedy Coombe. Eliana Eiland added another run with a sacrifice fly, and Kelsey Komorous further extended the lead with another sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Wayne State managed to score once in the sixth inning, but GVSU responded with six runs in their half of the inning to secure a mercy rule win. Ashley Platek pitched all six innings for her eighth win of the season.
The second game concluded with a closer scoreline of 4-3. The Lakers took an early lead, but Wayne State came back to lead 2-1 by the third inning. GVSU regained control in the fifth inning, scoring three runs to make it 4-2. Despite Wayne State narrowing the gap to one run in the sixth inning, Genesis Eggart closed out the game for her first save of the season.
Nevaeh Ingram started as pitcher for GVSU in this game and maintained her perfect record at 7-0 for this season.
The Lakers are set to conclude their regular season at home next weekend against Purdue Northwest and Parkside. These games will be available for streaming on FloSports.
