The Grand Valley State University softball team, ranked ninth, successfully swept Davenport in a doubleheader at their home opener on Saturday. The games were held at the GVSU Softball Field. In the first game, the Lakers secured a 10-1 victory in six innings and followed up with a 2-1 win in the second game. This performance improved their season record to 21-7 and 5-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

In the opening game, Grand Valley State took an early lead in the second inning. Nevaeh Ingram's RBI single scored Megan Koenigshof, followed by Faith Edwards bringing MaryJane Goodman home with another single. Morgan Spicer then hit a three-run double, increasing their lead to 5-0. Davenport managed to score once with a solo home run in the third inning. However, GVSU extended their lead further in the sixth inning with five more runs, concluding the game under mercy rule conditions.

Morgan Spicer was notable for her performance at bat, achieving three hits out of four attempts and driving in four runs. Nevaeh Ingram contributed two hits and two RBIs while also pitching all six innings with only one run allowed from four hits and four strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, GVSU again started strong as Hannah Hollister and Morgan Spicer both singled before Kelsey Komorous doubled to drive them home. Davenport responded with an RBI groundout in the fifth inning but could not close the gap further.

Ashley Platek pitched throughout all seven innings of this closely contested match-up for GVSU, allowing just one run off four hits alongside four strikeouts.

The Lakers are set to continue their weekend schedule against Saginaw Valley State on Sunday at home with another GLIAC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM. The games will be available for streaming on FloSports.
