Lakers secure comeback victory over Ferris State in GLIAC Tournament opener

The Grand Valley State softball team began their postseason journey with a narrow victory against Ferris State in the GLIAC Tournament. The game, held on Friday afternoon in Rosemont, Illinois, saw the Lakers come from behind to secure a 4-3 win, advancing them in the tournament's winner's bracket.

Ferris State initially took control of the game with three runs in the first inning. The Bulldogs capitalized on three hits to establish an early lead. However, Grand Valley State responded in the fourth inning when Morgan Spicer singled and Kelsey Komorous followed with a double that brought Spicer home.

The game's intensity heightened in the seventh inning as Liberti Fair hit a single for GVSU. With two outs and facing elimination, Megan Koenigshof tripled to score pinch runner Faith Edwards, reducing Ferris State's lead to one run. MaryJane Goodman then delivered a crucial single that tied the game at three runs each, pushing it into extra innings.

In the eighth inning, Genesis Eggart effectively shut down Ferris State by retiring their batters consecutively. Eliana Eiland started GVSU's offensive push with a single, followed by Hannah Hollister’s bunt that advanced Eiland to second base. Komorous then secured her second hit of the day with a single through the right side that allowed Eiland to score and clinch victory for GVSU.

Throughout the match, GVSU outhit Ferris State 9-5 despite both teams committing one error each. Key performances included Kelsey Komorous going 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Hannah Hollister also batting 2-for-4 with a double. Megan Koenigshof and MaryJane Goodman contributed significantly with RBIs while Genesis Eggart earned her eleventh win of the season after pitching over seven innings without conceding any runs.

Grand Valley State is set to face Saginaw Valley State next on Saturday at noon Eastern Time in another winner's bracket matchup. The victor will proceed to Sunday's championship game. Fans can watch live coverage on FloSports or follow updates via @GVSUSoftball on social media.
