The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to travel to Marquette, Michigan, for a tri-meet against Northern Michigan University and Saginaw Valley State University. The competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
The men's team has had a promising start to the season with a record of 2-1. Their only loss was against the No. 2 ranked University of Indianapolis in a competitive match. They now aim to recover as they face the Saginaw Valley Cardinals and the No. 10 ranked Northern Michigan Wildcats on their home ground.
Earlier this week, Junior Raul Briceno was recognized by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) as Swimmer of the Week. He achieved second place in both the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle events with times of 4:37.59 and 9:35.16 respectively.
Similarly, the GVSU women's team has started strong this season, holding a record of 2-1-0. Last week, they ended in a tie against the No. 9 ranked University of Indianapolis during an away meet. They will now compete against Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley State in this weekend's tri-meet.
Junior Lucy Heldey received GLIAC Swimmer of the Week honors after securing first place in both the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle events with times of 51.08 and 1:50.67 respectively. Heldey is expected to be instrumental in this weekend's competitions against the Wildcats and Cardinals.
Head coach Andy Boyce commented on their preparation: "We are preparing just like every other meet and we are headed up to Northern Michigan a bit earlier so we can practice on Friday and wake up early next morning and race at 11. It is a little different from what we are used to," he said. Boyce further explained that "this meet will give a lot of our athletes opportunities to race because there are 2 to 3 heats in every event."
