Grand Valley State University has announced that two of its football players have received weekly honors from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Junior linebacker Anthony Cardamone was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, while redshirt freshman punter Evan Sundermann earned the title of GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week. The announcement was made by the league office on Monday, October 21.
Both players were instrumental in Grand Valley State's recent victory against Saginaw Valley State, a game that ended with a score of 16-9. This marks the fifth time in 2024 that Grand Valley State athletes have been recognized with GLIAC Player of the Week honors.
Cardamone's performance included a season-high 11 tackles, comprising seven solo and four assisted tackles. He also recorded two tackles for loss and achieved a crucial quarterback sack during the fourth quarter, which forced Saginaw Valley to punt. His efforts contributed significantly to limiting Saginaw Valley's offensive plays and total yardage.
Sundermann's contribution came through his punting skills, averaging 45.6 yards over seven punts. Notably, he placed two punts at Saginaw Valley’s one-yard line and another two at their 20-yard line. The average starting field position for Saginaw following his punts was their own 21-yard line.
In related news, Grand Valley State has ascended to the top spot in both the AFCA Coaches' Poll and D2Football media poll this week. The Lakers are set to host Ferris State in an upcoming match known as the Anchor-Bone Classic on Saturday, October 26. The event is sold out but will be available for viewing on FloFootball or WXSP-TV.
