Grand Valley State University (GVSU) secured a decisive 51-28 victory over Wayne State during their Homecoming game at Lubbers Stadium. The match, attended by 10,377 spectators, saw GVSU dominate from the outset, scoring on its first seven possessions to establish a commanding 44-0 lead early in the third quarter.
The Lakers' defense set the tone by forcing a three-and-out on Wayne State's opening drive. This was followed by an efficient offensive performance as GVSU embarked on a 12-play, 44-yard drive capped by Mathew Bacik's 34-yard field goal. A significant play came when senior wide receiver Kyle Nott caught a pass from sophomore quarterback Vinnie Meschi and ran for a 76-yard touchdown.
GVSU's special teams also contributed significantly when junior linebacker Riley Simpson blocked a punt that senior linebacker Damonte McCurdy returned for a touchdown. Junior tight end Harrison Unger recorded his first career touchdown reception from Meschi, further extending the Lakers' lead.
In the second half, Kellen Reed returned the kickoff to set up another scoring opportunity. The offense continued to excel with runs from Darrell Johnson and a touchdown pass from Alex Thole to senior wide receiver Cody Tierney.
Defensively, GVSU restricted Wayne State to just 68 yards in the first half. Junior safety Luke McLean led with ten tackles and forced one fumble. Senior safety Kobe Hayward added four tackles while sophomore defensive tackle Josh Schell made history with four pass deflections.
The Lakers amassed 453 total yards—234 rushing and 219 passing—with Meschi completing eight of fourteen passes for two touchdowns in his starting debut. Derrick Woods led the ground attack with nine carries for 56 yards and one touchdown.
Next Saturday, GVSU will travel to face Michigan Tech in another GLIAC contest.
