The Grand Valley State women's soccer team began their postseason with a narrow 1-0 victory against Parkside in the GLIAC quarterfinals. The match, held on Tuesday evening, saw the Lakers improve their season record to 12 wins, 1 loss, and 6 draws.
The decisive moment came in the 39th minute when Kendall Aikens scored what would be the only goal of the game. This marked her second goal of the season, with assists from teammates Alli French and Sophia Morgan.
Although Parkside outshot Grand Valley State 13 to 10, both teams were equal in shots on goal at six apiece. The Lakers had an edge in corner kicks, tallying six compared to Parkside's four.
Aikens led her team with one goal from two shots on target. Vesna Dennison contributed three shots with two being on target. French assisted Aikens while attempting three shots herself, one of which was on goal. Morgan also assisted and took two shots, with one hitting the target. Goalkeeper Cailynn Junk made six saves during the match, securing her ninth individual shutout for the season.
Following this win, Grand Valley State will proceed to face Saginaw Valley State in the GLIAC semifinals on Friday in Marquette, Michigan at Northern Michigan's campus.
