Grand Valley State advances to Sweet 16 after defeating Maryville

The Grand Valley State women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Maryville in the NCAA second round on Sunday, November 24, 2024. This win advances the Lakers to the Sweet 16 for the 19th consecutive season, bringing their record to 14-1-7.

Kennedy Bearden scored the decisive goal in the 18th minute with a left-footed strike from outside the box. Taylor Reid and Emma Chudik assisted on Bearden's fourth goal of the season.

In the second half, GVSU's defense played a crucial role by stopping several offensive attempts from Maryville. Goalkeeper Cailynn Junk made nine saves, six of which were in the second half. With only 20 seconds remaining, GVSU conceded a penalty kick after being called for a foul in the box. Junk successfully saved this penalty, ensuring GVSU's narrow victory.

Despite being outshot by Maryville with figures of 19-8 overall and 9-4 on target, GVSU managed to maintain their lead. Maryville also had nine corner kicks compared to one for GVSU.

Junk improved her personal record to 12-1-7 and achieved her 11th individual shutout of the season. Alli French led GVSU with three shots, two of which were on target. Kennedy Bearden recorded her third game-winning goal of the season. Emma Chudik added her 11th point this season while Taylor Reid provided her sixth assist.
