Grand Valley State University's football team ended their season with a 44-26 loss to Harding University in the NCAA Playoff at Lubbers Stadium. The Lakers finished the 2024 season with an overall record of 11-2.
The game began with GVSU taking an early lead. Junior quarterback Ike Udengwu connected with senior wide receiver Kyle Nott for a significant 30-yard gain, setting up a scoring drive that culminated in sophomore running back Khalil Eichelberger's one-yard touchdown run. This was followed by RS freshman placekicker Mathew Bacik's successful PAT, putting the Lakers ahead at 7-0.
However, Harding responded effectively by reviving their running game and managed to secure a 17-7 lead by halftime. They continued their momentum into the second half, extending their advantage with additional scores. A highlight for GVSU came when sophomore wide receiver Kellen Reed returned a kickoff for 90 yards, marking his fourth career return touchdown.
In individual performances, Ike Udengwu completed 13 of his 25 pass attempts, accumulating 179 passing yards and adding another 21 yards on the ground. Running back Syone Usma-Harper also contributed significantly, catching three passes for a total of 58 yards and scoring a four-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
On defense, junior linebacker Anthony Cardamone led GVSU with 14 tackles while senior defensive tackle Jack Gilchrist recorded ten stops.
Despite their efforts, Grand Valley State could not overcome Harding's strong performance and thus concluded their playoff journey this season.
