The Grand Valley State women's soccer team secured their 17th regional championship with a 2-0 victory over Drury. This win advances them to the elite eight in the NCAA Tournament, bringing their season record to 15-1-7.
Drury outshot GVSU 14-7 but only managed two shots on goal compared to the Lakers' five. The Panthers had nine corner kick opportunities, while the Lakers had four.
The match remained scoreless until freshman Sarah Fromm scored in the 72nd minute, marking her fourth goal of the season and first game-winning goal. Taylor Reid assisted with a well-placed pass from the right side. Just a minute later, Reid provided another assist for Ryann Fetty, who scored her fourth goal of the season in the 73rd minute.
Cailynn Junk recorded her third consecutive shutout and 12th individual shutout of the season with two saves, improving her record to 13-1-7. Fetty contributed two shots and one goal while playing all 90 minutes. Reid added one shot and two assists in her 83 minutes on the field. Alex Williams, Kacy Lauer, Vesna Dennison, Daan Louwerse, and Mackenzie Ford also played full matches.
GVSU will face either Minnesota State or Central Missouri in the elite eight round next Saturday (Dec.7). The Lakers hold a historical record of 13-3 in this stage of the tournament.
