The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Lakers swim and dive teams made a strong start at the Calvin Winter Invitational in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Both the men's and women's teams finished the first day of competition in first place.
On the men's side, Raul Briceno secured victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:25.95. Jon Kantzenbach followed closely, taking second place with a time of 4:28.20. Esteban Nuñez Del Prado claimed first place in the 200 IM, clocking in at 1:46.76, while Will Herwig achieved a top-five finish.
Evan Scotto DiVetta won the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 19.92, and Matt Bosch placed fourth. The men's team also excelled in relay events; Bosch, Dies, Nuñez Del Prado, and Scotto DiVetta set a new pool record at Venema Aquatic Center by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:18.81. Additionally, the GVSU men’s team took first place in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:11.47.
For the women’s team, Katie O'Connell triumphed in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.23, while Linda Frick finished seventh. Sara Alvarez won the 200 IM event with a time of 2:02.63, and Vittoria Proietti secured second place at 2:03.35.
Lucy Hedley earned second place in the women's 50-yard freestyle with her performance timed at 23.2 seconds. In relay competitions, Angelica Angilletta, Kiersten Harmon, Lucy Hedley, and Alysa Wager achieved third place in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay with a timing of 1:33.46.
The women’s team also set a new school record by finishing second in the women's 400 medley relay at three minutes and forty-two point fifty-one seconds (3:42.51). The relay team included Sara Alvarez, Lucy Hedley, Vittoria Proietti, and Alysa Wager.
Both GVSU men’s and women’s teams are scheduled to compete on Day Two on Friday, December sixth starting from ten o'clock A.M., continuing into finals scheduled for six P.M., including diving events which will also begin at ten A.M., concluding later during finals at six P.M.
